SpaceX says 12,000 satellites isn’t enough, so it might launch another 30,000

Why do you assume I don’t know that? His figures are public knowledge, but many of the constraints around satcom are not.

Even at twice the cost, the situation is not different. Maintaining a constellation is more than simply getting the satellites into space. Still, 15 billion dollars just for the equipment - not even the associated launches - is hardly chump change even for SpaceX. The technical and financial challenges of this situation are very different.

5G is going to make most of the first world market inaccessible to satellite internet companies. The primary market audience at this point are the rural and third world communities. Satellite internet providers may be able to win some first world market share if they can deliver the speeds they’re currently advertising at a competitive price, but that’s a big if. Personally, I don’t see it happening anytime soon based on what I have seen in the ground station market.
