Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Austria and Sweden have recognized this morning Juan Guaidó as the interim president of Venezuela (Article in French)

That is still weak bullshit. When democracy is rolled back in Egypt, the EU had endless debates and decided that doing nothing substantive is the way to go.

But in Venezuela suddenly they are not worried power vacuums or instability. They very quickly adopt the position that they won’t recognize Maduro.

If the EU was consistent what they should have done was refuse to recognize Sisi at all and they should have tried to isolate him like they are doing now in Venezuela. Instead he welcomed in red carpet ceremonies.

And what I am saying it that the EU and American response to the Venezuela crisis isn’t about democracy or values or “democrats standing with democrats”. It is about interests.
