A specter is haunting r/whitepeopletwitter

I never understood this take, what do these people think are the largest polluting companies? It's animal agriculture, travel and energy. These largely exists through consumer use, that if lessened would obviously directly impact these top 100 organizations.

Not to mention eating fruit and vegetables off season has a huge carbon foot print in both energy used in the growing and energy in the transportation. I remember working at Burger King and we imported lettuce from the United States to be served in New Zealand - can we grow lettuce in New Zealand? sure, but HQ insisted on having this fancy 'flat' lettuce. Imagine the carbon miles for importing lettuce via air freight all the way from the US to New Zealand. For example, imagine if people ate fresh tomatoes during the summer where they can be grown locally and when there is a bumper crop to preserve them and then use them during the winter thus avoiding the carbon miles associated with bringing them long distances from overseas? Now, I'm not saying that we should construct a hermit kingdom but we also need to have a close look at how the choices we make, for the sake of convenience and preference, impacts the environment. People may get angry at businesses but it is ultimately businesses that sniff out an opportunity and see they can make money catering to that demand.
