Splitting the holidays

My wife and I are from the same hometown, but I moved away to join the military when we were in our early 20s (we didn't start dating until our 30s).

We live about 4 hours from our hometown. When we first got married, she used to feel sad during holiday time and we spent most of November and December traveling back and forth home to see family. We have two children (my biological sons, her stepsons) so I spoke to her about the importance of being in our home for Christmas.

We decided to start doing Thanksgiving where we live since our kids usually go with their mother to her hometown. We usually go to our hometown BEFORE Christmas and then come back home to our home on Christmas Eve. It's worked well for us that way.
