[Spoiler] A different perspective of Season 3 Felicity

I think many fans (and not necessarily only Lauriver shippers) are also disappointed with the many unnecessary retcons that the writers have made in order to make Felicity and Oliver seem more "fated" than they really were/are. One example is the infamous "red pen" scene in "The Calm", another one is Felicity's gratuitous five second appearance in "The Return".

IF Felicity and Oliver have so much chemistry and IF it is such a great relationship as their fans claim, the retcons and the near-erasure of Oliver's past romantic/emotional history is unnecessary, and even damaging to the credibility of their relationship. Another thing that bothered me is that they turned not only Diggle, but Ra's al Ghul and Slade into Olicity fanboys with Ra's comments about "the women you love", and Slades mention of Felicity Smoak. These lines sound like something the writers just throw in there, to titillate the Olicity shippers. They used this kind of intrafictional shipping in the season three Lauriver arc as well, and I didn't like it then either. It is just clumsy writing IMHO...rather than showing us how important Oliver and Felicity are to each other in their shared scenes, they make OTHER characters throw in references to their love in order to hammer in how important it is.

It is as if the writers didn't trust their own ability to convince us that Olicity is a viable relationship without retconning and changing their own writing, which is odd, especially since the Olicity fans really don't need to be convinced in order to ship the pairing hardcore. I mean, they were convinced that Oliver and Felicity are made for each other already in late season one, and throughout season two, and would easily have bought less hamfisted depiction of their romance.
