EXT. DORNE - TOWER OF JOY - DUSK

With the battle over, and the Kingsguard slain, along with most of his men, Eddard begins the ascent up the tower, leaving the only other survivors, Howland Reed and Arthur Dayne, following close behind.

Eddard swallows hard as the light of the sunset through the tower's portholes illuminates his way. He is tired yet determined. The sound of a woman screaming hastens his steps, the heavy weight of his blood soaked armor revealing his approach to a heavy closed door to the highest room of the tower.

He pounds his glove covered fist on the door.

NED

Lyanna!

He hears screams again. The muffled voices of women giving words of courage, and then the sounds of a child.

Eddard again pounds his fist to the door as he yells out.

NED

I am Eddard Stark. Brother of Lyanna Stark. Open this -

The door's wooden guard is lifted, and is pulled open swinging by an exhausted looking woman. Rays of light from the setting sun momentarily blind Eddard as he sees his sister surrounded by four women, all stained with dark blood.

Eddard rushes to his sister's bed side, which has bundles of dried roses all around it. Her bed is soaked in blood almost entirely. He removes his gloves and holds the side of his sister's head, and then clutches her hands.

Lyanna speaks in a strained whisper.

LYANNA

Ned... Ned...

NED

I am here. I will protect you. We will go home together.

LYANNA

No... Ned, please. Understand... Promise... my... They'll...

Eddard looks to the child, still covered in blood, held by one of the women.

NED

This... he did this to you?

LYANNA

Ned... I...

Lyanna winces in pain. The color is gone from her face.

LYANNA

Promise me, Ned.

NED

I will. For you. I swear.

Lyanna smiles briefly, looks relaxed, and stares at Eddard as she clenches her teeth and hands. Her eyes become locked into the distance, and then she becomes still as the sun's final light fades from the horizon.
