[Sportsnet Video] Blue Jays' Gil Kim on the importance of raising Asian visibility in baseball

He’s not advocating for a hard quota, but how do you achieve his goal without intentionally working to up the number of ‘his tribe’ playing to suit this notion that they have to be visible?

Whether he wants a firm number or not, he’s still advocating for more of ‘his tribe’. That’s not the same thing as removing hurdles so that anyone who wants to can get access to the game, regardless of their background, that’s tribalist lobbying.

To pretend that it isn't, to exist in an oblivious "colour-blind" environment is mostly to be part of the majority where you've never HAD to think about race.

I’m a firm believer in MLK and his belief that we should judge people by the content of their character and not by the colour of their skin. Talent, merit, education, performance, experience, character ... these are human universals and salient to the game of baseball. Skin tone? That’s not salient at all.

So, I don’t care if you’re a pejorative racist and you want to exclude people because they are the wrong colour or tribe, or you’re a benevolent racist and want to include people because they are the right colour or tribe.

I just care that they are good baseball players, because that’s what matters to the game.
