Statement from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo Regarding Indian Point Nuclear Facility - “Yesterday I learned that radioactive tritium-contaminated water leaked into the groundwater...alarming levels of radioactivity at three monitoring wells, with one well’s radioactivity increasing nearly 65,000 percent"

Tritium (HT) from nuclear reactors is primarily in the form of tritiated water (HTO), which is a low energy beta emitter that can't penetrate human skin.

Right in this second sentence we see a glaring factually wrong statement, that beta radiation doesn't penetrate human skin. That's actually alpha radiation.

Aalpha radiation has the most mass and is the most damaging. It can't penetrate skin because of its low energy high mass nature. Except, if you ingest a radioactive emitter like tritiated water the alpha radiation will penetrate your internal soft tissues. Your body also doesn't know the difference between a radioactive and non-radioactive particle.

For example, in most nuclear melt down or bombing situations the first and most dangerous issue is the iodine which has a short half life but is very active. If you ingest this radioactive iodine your body does not know its "unsafe." It will put the iodine in your thyroid where the radioactive particles emitting alpha radiation will be throwing out bowling balls into your DNA and every strike is rolling the dice that your body will fix it or it will turn into cancer. This is why thyroid cancer is the first thing doctors look for in a situation like Fukushima.

I'm sad that a "radiation protection scientist" can't even keep straight which form of radiation isn't an issue externally and also that they leave out the critical point that ingestion would exposure you to that form of radiation anyway and its only when the emitter isn't internalized that you're safe.

This gets into why comparisons to plane rides are bullshit. "Oh don't worry, its like a plane ride." Except in the plane ride you're getting external exposure to radiation from the Sun. With exposure to radioactive waste you will likely ingest it and get a lifetime internal exposure where you won't be protected from alpha radiation.

Its really sad how willing people are to go along with lies told by "experts" who can't even keep basic facts about their field straight just because the alternative is an unpleasant truth they don't want to consider.

I'M not saying this is the end of the world, but radioactive waste in ground aquifers is a big fucking deal because it shows that containment has failed somewhere in the plant. "Experts" who are supposedly looking out for your safety seem to constantly downplay everything and thats what will likely lead to a situation 5-10 years from now where nothing is done about this because "its not that big of a deal and budgets are tight" and then the breach will suddenly be 100x worse and they'll all point fingers at each other ultimately blaming some kind of systemic failure rather than the people involved who aren't doing their fucking job in the first place by following the ancient proverb of "a stitch in time saves nine." Stop propagandizing people and start doing your job.
