Statement from OU football team: continuing silent protest during practices and seeking further punishment to leadership of the Oklahoma SAE chapter

So I started replying on my phone, and then got on a tangent about the differences in mainstream racism today versus that of say 50-60 years ago when it was practically at its peak in this country. This is nothing new, but bear with me:

The black generations prior to the civil rights movement had little means of acquiring wealth and education, so naturally a black person born from them would have no inheritance or an educated upbringing. Without an education, work becomes harder to find, and when we started outsourcing in the '70s and '80s is when we saw all the decent paying blue collar jobs that blacks could more easily get go overseas. So now you have large percentages of the black community that are poor, uneducated and can't find work. Black people become bitter at their situation, as anyone does, and they turn to crime. Since so many black people get arrested for crimes, cops start to profile black people because the ugly truth is that profiling gets results if your goal is for arrests to be made. Black people unify against the cops, snitches get stitches and protests and riots occur furthering the gap of understanding between mainstream culture and black culture. I'm not even touching on the perpetuation of fatherless children, but that's another obvious example of the kind of struggles the community has to deal with.

So today, the majority of black people don't have good educations or incomes. On top of that, thug culture has been popularized which is an intimidating culture to outsiders, as it centers around being tough, dangerous, independent and ruthless. But today we're integrated, and we've known all types in all colors. Most of us have known black thugs and white thugs, black geniuses and white geniuses, etc. Most people when they see anyone in a business suit and tie, regardless of skin color, they won't likely feel threatened by them. Take those same people and put them in a do-rag, wifebeater, jeans belted mid-thigh with some gold chains and some gangsta tats, and most people are going to feel intimidated based off of their appearance. I mean, when you think about it, you have a large portion of the black community posing as villainous outlaws stacking stolen cash who are tough as nails and don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves and their own people. On top of that, you have a large poor subsection of blacks subscribing to that culture and mimicking speech inflection, posture, appearance and values. This intimidates nearly anyone in mainstream culture, regardless of their race.

The difference is that it's ok to be offended or intimidated by someone's culture, but too many people paint it as racism because they don't understand the difference. People often confuse racism with simple pragmatism, for instance there are many that believe that requiring an employee to speak fluent English is racist, but in a country that overwhelmingly speaks English, it's just being practical. Again, to want one official language is also practical. It's never a good thing to have a society that can't communicate with one another. If I'm hiring, and a larger percentage of blacks are under-educated and don't have things employers like you to have like a clean background check, a car and cell phone, then my hands are kind of tied on who I hire. It's most likely going to be someone who isn't black because of the percentages and the practical requirements.

There is no easy fix, and talking about it does nothing. The only thing that will fix it is time and not dwelling on how much we don't like each other. These discussions in the media aren't easing racial tensions. They're making it worse, because it's pitting everyone against each other. Mixon, a black guy, can get away with violent physical assault, but a couple of white guys say some mean spirited words in what was assumed to be a private setting, that is leaked, and suddenly you'd think they'd been raping children in the basement of their frat. Now tell me, is that racist? If the tables were turned, it would most certainly be called out as racist.

Funny thing is that I said that this is a tired old discussion, but look at me go... Oh well.
