Statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass ripped from base in Rochester, N.Y., park

Yeah, but racists in the US aren’t typically as well informed as hitler and this seems to have been carried out (if by anyone) the rank and file racists, not the leaders. Also, I’m a reasonably well informed (obviously, there are many people better informed) person and, while when OP mentioned Douglas in connection with the July 4th speech i remember the vague outlines of the speech, I would never have associated him and the date without the prompt. It seems more likely that if it was torn down by racists, its likely it had more to do with the date as a general day of “patriotism”(in this context, white nationalism as it is interpreted by possible perpetuators) than the famous speech Douglas gave.
