Unless you are looking for rural? Elmsdale is great in that it has the malls, however, living in Milford is not as bad as you make it out to be, It's not like you are driving into the middle of nowhere, It's literally less than 10 minutes from Elmsdale. Not to mention it is 25 minutes to either Truro or Halifax from Exit 9.

There are a lot of pro's and cons of the area, and the fact of the matter is, even if you lived in Elmsdale, if you are looking for amenities to go hang out or do something other than work out or shop, or even do anything after 9pm, you'll still have to drive into the City.

No ill intentions intended, but your description is a little close minded. There are a lot of great spots to live all through the corridor, from Enfield to Shubie, and even more rural if that is what you want, but saying you won't have a decent living is a little much my friend.
