I still remember where I was when Vader said “Luke, help me take this mask off.” I couldn’t have been more than ten years old. I can still that feel the excitement of my ten year old self. Extraordinary.

If you read the books it makes perfect sense

I see this excuse over and over, applied to all three trilogies, but I don't think that's good enough. If the movies can't stand on their own they're bad movies, or at least lazily written.

What you say about the remnant is perfectly sensible of course, and the Thrawn Trilogy is arguably the most believable and competent continuation of the story - even if it's not a cornucopia of innovation.

My problem is that in RotJ, it's heavily implied that the Empire is positively defeated, seeing as the entirely galaxy is, unlike in ANH, ecstatically celebrating, and while 30 years is a long time, I don't think TFA properly bridges that gap between "headless chicken remnant probably being hunted down all over the galaxy" and the "galactic superpower" that it is in the movie.
