Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity with no financial gain, but it is not confined to those limits. If they freely gave up their personal time to come to work, they are volunteering whether they are paid or not.

You're asked "we need some one to fill in for Bob, who will do this?", you are by definition "volunteering" if you agree to fill in for Bob.

I'm in no way agreeing with OP in this case... I wasn't there. I don't know the circumstances, whether they truly "volunteered" or not.
