Stittsville Subway keeps tips from workers

I worked for subway for a few years and, while it was the worst job I ever had, the short bread thing is simply not true.

I actually remember working the day this image went viral. I got an urgent call from the franchise owner, who had received a call from corporate, and I needed to stop what I was doing and make sure all of our bread was truly a foot long. Within a week we had a new measuring tool that attached to our cutting boards so customers could clearly see the size of their bread.

The dough came in frozen sticks which were thawed and stretched to fit a foot long silicon mold. If you didn’t stretch the dough properly you’d end up with short bread. The store I worked at liked to provide employees with a couple hours of training then schedule them for a shift where they would be left alone to run the restaurant. I know I baked a few short pieces, it happens and you’re supposed to throw them out but bread takes a while to prep/bake and there were always customers who needed a shitty sandwich. So no conspiracy to save a bit of dough, just undertrained, underpaid and overworked employees trying to prep meats/veggies, bake bread and keep the store clean while serving every customer that walked in.

Subway is a terrible corporation that emphasizes being cheap from the top down, it really should be part of their mission statement and core values. The corporate level treats the franchise owners like garbage and so the franchise owners treat the employees like garbage.

We had a tip jar that was supposed to be split between the staff, over a few years I think I received $14. I know our owner liked to dip into it anytime the register was short.
