Straight white men of Reddit, how have you been an ally to those born different to you?

Probably the most impact I've had is monetary. When I was working as a plumber in New Jersey. Cities like Newark, Jersey City and Camden. One instance in particular stands out to me. I arrived at a middle aged black woman's house with health problems. The city sewer main was backing up into her basement. She had called the city first but they demanded that nothing was wrong and to call a plumber. Cue; me. I show up and she's already in tears, saying she can't afford to pay me because she can't afford to pay for her meds and me. I told her that the city was at fault (literally 2' of sewage in her basement.) and the company they subcontracted to Jet/Vacuum city mains had a massive conflict of interest by running an "Emergency Restoration" company. It was an incentive for them to let he flooding get as bad as possible. Awful. Of course I didn't charge her. But there were so many calls like this, where poor people (of all colors really, but primarily black) would've had to choose between eating or shitting for a week. Would have to choose between had to get their kids to school or potable drinking water. This happened so much that my company eventually fired me over it. Which I'm not angry about really, I was letting business go in their eyes, but in mine I was making a fucking difference in the world.
