Struggling putting a tampon in

I know some women who didn't really start using tampons til after they started having sex because there was a lot of discomfort. You're not gross for using pads. That said, if you're having severe pain during your period and having issues even getting a finger in, it might be a good idea to see an ob gyn about it since, among other things, some girls have septate or imperforate hymens that can cause problems.

You probably don't have vaginismus. That's more of a condition associated with repeated painful sexual encounters that make you involuntarily clench down there, causing more pain. As far as getting a tampon in, some women find squatting or lying on their back or spreading their legs helps, as well as making using a bit of lube etc. I usually use tampons without an applicator because there's a brand (ob tampons) that skew small and are easy to insert, but some women find ones with plastic applicators to be very helpful because they reduce friction.
