There is a completely false impression that Australians did a short, sharp lockdown and have been having barbecues on the beach ever since. The one place in Australia that had a genuine covid outbreak (Melbourne) went into one of the toughest lockdowns in the world for 8 months that was prolonged several times due to pretty shocking failures in the system and including the government literally breaking human rights law at one point. It was not a short sharp lockdown. Australia (including Melbourne) is now in a great position, but there was certainly no easy solution that fixes covid, it’s not that simple.
