Well, P2P is still better than its alternatives.

F2Ps make almost every game activity a nuisance (either by limiting instances, gear, inventory slots, appearance or whole parts/game modes like housing, PvP -usually due to gear and/or CS-only stat boosts-, ) pushing you into spending or have a pretty poor game experience. Even more, when we consider freemium based models.

B2Ps are just the middle-of-the-ground approach, earning some cash through game (and/or expansion) purchases but not enough for a profit and/or new content pushing some annoying mtx into the mix in the F2P way.

P2P doesn't need mtx to survive, but sadly they've seen they are a way to squeeze more profit. Even then, they're the ones with less on them and the ones which push you less into them.
