Submit to husbands authority...

^ This right here. We're very quick to throw around terms like "sexist" and "racist" because it's a very quick way to "win" an argument and feel confident in your own beliefs. "At least I'm not a sexist." That sort of absolutism is literally the exact same reasoning that people who have these sort of viewpoints use to justify their own beliefs.

The idea is that women and men are equal, just that a woman should submit to her husbands authority. The system is designed around the fact that men do love women and that they are just as equal to men, just that their role in society is different. It's kind of like the idea of Republican Motherhood in the U.S from the early 20th century. She wasn't any less than her husband, it was just that her job in society was to raise these children in the ideals the state (or church) had in place in the society. The man was scorned just the same if he was a deadbeat with no job who couldn't provide for his family than if a woman were to refuse to raise her children.

Of course, that's in theory. Like /u/greatjorb88 said, it is incredibly easy to abuse this system and have men abuse women. Ethical issues aside, it works pretty damn well if all parties involved (I mean, I guess Jesus sort of has an active role in the relationship despite his not being alive and all) adhere to all principles set forth in the system. The problem is that in the real world, a lot of men can and will use this to their advantage to abuse their wives emotionally and physically, and that men are expected to work for the most amount of money regardless of their actual happiness.

Overall, it's a very broken and archaic system that should have very little relevance in the way that we as a society should view things. I believe that men and women should be able to choose whatever roles they want to regardless of their gender. (Excluding obvious exceptions like pregnancy assuming any technology that may change doesn't exist.)

Protest an idea, but protest it for the right reasons.
