This subreddit is missing several things that made the Final Exam successful: changing the subreddit to more closely resemble it may improve its chances of success.

I think part of what made the Final Exam work was the structure is gave the problem-solving process. Whatever this sub produces, so far as a rule set, will need to be rigid.

As an Eagle Scout, I suggest that the subreddit make use of SMART goals to make sure we don't get a whole bunch of murky nonsense. This applies to both the making of the rule set and to the proposal of problems. But carts and horses.

Ideally speaking, each objective should be:

  • Specific – target a specific area for improvement.
  • Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.
  • Assignable – specify who will do it. (This means new members should be assigned jobs to do, lest bystander)
  • Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.
  • Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

Ideally, the first item of business will be to determine how questions are asked (preferably by setting a smart goal for us to work towards). The second would be how questions are answered. The third would be which questions to answer. The final would be to actually start answering questions.

Each of those categories can also be subdivided in multitude of ways again. But the first two are crucial to getting the sub to go anywhere.

So quick, Somebody give us a due date for getting the process done, and we'll maybe then do it. Specs of what kinds of problems we must address, etc. are what we're looking for.

Eg:

"I want to rob this particular gas station by the end of the month. I want to make it out alive and with at least $200 richer (I know, pretty low standards), given a budget of $50. Can you guys tell me how to a) what tools I'll need, b) what to expect in terms of resistance while there, c) how to launder the money when I have it, and most importantly, d) how to plan for every possible contingency in existence so I don't get caught and thrown in jail, or worse expelled. Thanks guys."

This would of course be followed by a list of assets a la Princess Bride, etc. I'm tired, gonna stop writing.
