Sujaya Dasgupta's Controversy on Twitter

Firstly, thank you so much for posting about Sujaya on this sub. It hints at why she deleted her twitter account (something I'm deeply upset about as I wanted to share my Zoya fan art with her). It's unfortunate that your sincere post is getting downvoted to the depths of hell as this is a vital conversation that the fandom shouldn't ignore. The stan culture has already gripped this fandom with fans having their entire identities defined by worshipping certain actors. They are not the norm, but a vocal minority.

This is a very complex issue. I completely agree with the Efem when they point out to Sujaya that there's a time and place to talk about certain issues. That supporting the rights of one community doesn't mean not supporting the rights of another community. Sujaya's response was reflexive, but I DO NOT think that it was anti-black as Jessie pointed out when defending Sujaya.

So what was Sujaya miffed about? Well, you have to understand that the brown community feels further marginalized in the conversations about racism. It sometimes feels that black pain is the only pain that matters given the amount of media attention it does receive. It's not racist to point out the discrepancies in the way some victims get more attention than other victims. It's systemic and cultural. Sujaya is addressing this particular flaw within the anti-racist movement - how non-black marginalized groups aren't being given the same focus as their black counterparts even though racism impacts them all adversely.

It's also paramount to remember that the black community isn't immune to colorism and prejudice just like any other community. Creating "black-only" spaces is great to highlight the black voices, but it's divisive within the anti-racist movement at large as the black community has more clout than the relatively weaker groups that feel entirely left out.
