The Sulu Saga: George Takei Gives His Final Words On the Matter

Conspiracy Theory: Liars and Dissemblers Lie and Dissemble

I don't think it's really about Roddenberry or the storyline.

It's about Cho. I wouldn't be surprised if Cho sought out Takei for advice because Cho didn't feel comfortable with the role--possibly even angry about it. (It's not that Cho's a homophobe, but because Sulu has been an important icon for Asian American men--perhaps the first and only mainstream Asian male character who doesn't get his metaphorical dick cut off.) Takei understands and agrees with Cho.

But Takei also knows Cho can't say anything or else he'll be crucified by LGBTs. So Takei tells Cho not to make an issue of it (tend to your promotional obligations, etc.)

Takei then takes it upon himself to register the objection (there would be less LGBT heat). He doesn't want to state it's because of what Sulu represents to Asian males (because why don't Asian males speak up for themselves?), so he lays down a smokescreen re: Roddenberry's vision. (The goal isn't to get Hollywood casting to say "Oh, you're right, we'll stop fucking over Asian males." Rather, the goal was just to get Pegg/Lin to leave Sulu alone.)

Unfortunately, the plan fails. Pegg/Lin don't care about straight Asian guys. Apparently, they need to impress someone with their LGBT creds.

The thing is, they don't care about queer Asian guys either, least of all Takei.
