Summer 2015 Anime Impressions [Discussion]

I've picked up less this season than last season, but I've liked what I've been watching so far.

  • Gangsta is especially good. It's a great show with a more adult style of presentation in its storytelling. Aside from the important explanations behind things like the Dog Tags, it follows the show/don't tell mentality which I am a big fan of.

  • Akagami no Shirayuki-hime was an anime I knew would be good looking at the studio and staff behind it. It's a fantasy romance series, and it has been brilliant since episode 1. Shirayuki has been a fantastic female lead, breaking the dependent female stereotype that one would normally see in a fairytale type setting like this one. The soundtrack has also been really good too.

  • Rokka no Yuusha has been a fun solid fantasy series so far. The animation has been subpar, but the characters are charming, and the Aztec based setting and story have been interesting.

  • Ushio to Tora is 90s shonen action, and it's been fun to watch. It's nothing overly special in terms of story and characters yet, but the action has been solid, and the potential is totally there. I trust Mappa and the director of Trigun and Hajime no Ippo on this one.

  • Durarara!!x2 Ten has been a solid continuation of the first cour. It's slower paced so far, but it's this kind of story presentation in Durarara that I really like. On top of that, there has been a lot of focus on individual characters, and it has been great so far.

  • Charlotte has been disappointing. For a Jun Maeda show, it's lacking in the "feels" department. The comedy has been decent, and I really like Nao and Yu as characters so far. The potential is there, but at this point, we're only waiting to see if Jun Maeda delivers the tears and learned from his mistakes pertaining to pacing as seen in Angel Beats.

Exceeded expectations: Gangsta, Akagami no Shirayuki-hime, Rokka no Yuusha

Met expectations: Durarara, Ushio to Tora

Has yet to meet expectations: Charlotte

Favorite this season (so far): Gangsta or Akagami no Shirayuki-hime

I'll pick up other shows depending on what people are saying over the next few weeks.
