SunlessKhan criticizes the current state of the matchmaking system on Twitter. Do you agree?

Tbf the likelihood of getting a good, smooth game is dependent on more than just how good and equally matched the players all are. I saw someone on here yesterday call RL a very ‘cerebral’ game, and I agree. The game is very dependent on your mindset. And your teammate’s mindset. And your opponents’ mindset.

Throwing 4-6 random players who have probably never (or rarely) played together and expecting to get a smooth game at least half of the time is a little unfair. The only rank that could even come close to that kind of consistency imo would be SSL, just based on people I’ve watched on Twitch. There is a smurfing problem in RL for sure, but I’d still wager that over 90% of the active playerbase is ranked what they should be, at least where we play at (I have not updated my flair in years) — I’m sure it gets worse the lower you go. Most players I run into are fairly evenly matched in skill. I’d say 1 in 4 games on average I run into players where I can definitively say they are not in the right rank — and half the time it’s because somebody just q’d with their buddy who’s diamond/low champ.

I agree with u/jalkhalifah. The amount of times I get called boosted in GC1 compared to any other rank I float to is remarkable. I am a solo q player, I cannot be boosted, but my teammates, who probably haven’t been in GC for that long, are quick to blame everything on me when I make a mistake, because “this is GC, everyone should be playing like they’re in RLCS now”. Meanwhile they have been making plenty of mistakes as well, and/or have not made any effort to be a supportive teammate, and when I crumble without their support in a 1v2 they left me in, it’s because I’m trash. Meanwhile, if my teammate is playing poorly and I can tell he feels bad, when I let them know I don’t care, and that a lot of it is on me as well (even if it’s not), they always play better. You win if you have fun. If you can’t have fun with a shitty tm8 I get it, but know that dragging them down will only make it worse. Not a stab towards you personally, I’m just ranting…

But my point here is that I don’t think that smurfing, in particular, is the cause for the state of ranked. Nor do I think it’s the main cause. I would just call it the nature of ranked matchmaking. Again, I think smurfing is still a problem that could be better addressed, but I wouldn’t blame the shortcomings of matchmaking and humanity on Psyonix alone.
