(the sun's already down so it's the) NIGHT THREAD

I can't be super helpful, because apparently I only read books by straight white men.

But
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley, which you might have read at school anyways but it's an amazing book.

The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson is easily my favourite ghost story. The Lottery and We Have Always Lived in the Castle usually come in an anthology of her short stories and I super recommend both.

If you like science fiction, Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie is a go-to rec for anyone asking for something to try. In fantasy, it's Earthsea by Le Guin.

If you don't like either, none of the below helps you :)

N. K. Jemisin is super hot in fantasy/science fiction circles, to the point where a bunch of fat white guys derailed (or attempted to derail, at least) the Hugo Awards because BLACK CHICKS CANT WRITE ABOUT DRAGONS AND SHIT THATS WHITE GUY STUFF WAHHHH. I find her a bit hit and miss tbh. Wasn't into The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, but I liked The Fifth Season.

Kameron Hurley caused a similar fuss with her Mirror Empire series, with extra neckbeard anger because protagonists shouldn't be women, let alone non-binary. It was hugely popular, partially because it hit when Game of Thrones was getting massive and partly because it's a very different perspective on the genre. Personally, I think she is a trash writer but whatever.

I read Kindred by Octavia Butler when I was a kid and was mind:blown. I've never read any of her other stories, but the Xenogenesis and Earthseed series are pretty famous.
