I don't think his family was overbearing, but he seems to have trauma from growing up in Brazil. His friends are very "macho" and he told me he used to beg God to make him not gay. I thought that from living overseas he'd become much more comfortable with who he is, but he's never been in a relationship and became convinced there was something wrong with the way he looked. That's how he got drawn into using the apps; the attention and compliments he'd get. I remember one time he freaked out because he thought I'd told another Brazilian guy we both know that he's gay. I hadn't but didn't think it was an issue, as he has been openly gay as far as I know for years now.
