For reference, I initially compared New York to New Orleans, which has a "Louisiana gun law" murder rate of 39.50.
If you want more comprehensive than just murder rates, here's another source. The Economist. New York is the safest in America on their list at number 27. 1-26 are all cities outside the US.
New York is safe. At least by American standards.
