Yep. My smallish city resembled the bottom picture in a lot of places. Yet some of the city's citizens were participating in the top picture. The local culture pats itself on the back about their southern hospitality and how they'd give someone the shirt off their back (unlike those city folk, I guess), but they also casually comment to me about how they'd like to shoot BLM protesters and their bumperstickers praise police brutality and hurting gay people. So it's all very folksy and kind mixed in with casual, non-stop racism and violent fantasies. As a white man, I was often assumed to be "one of them" and so they'd say things in front of me that freaked me out. But oh yes, they're so genteel and homey, unlike the people in big cities. So cozy.
