Surge in gas tampering complaints after East Village blast

Already posted this story on Reddit, but I think it's relevant in light of the fact that a fucking building just blew up because of a gas leak:

Last time I called con ed about a gas smell, they came, said there was a problem with a valve, turned off the gas and told my mgmt co to fix it. mgmt company came, turned on the gas within an hour, told me there was never a problem and then rescinded my lease renewal. Legally, after talking to lawyers, I find out my only likely recourse would be to take them to court and be granted another year lease and that's it. For market rate apts, one of the few (two as far as I can tell) protections you have against a rescinded lease renewal is if it's for complaining to a gov't agency about repairs (the other is discrimination).

I can't even get the con ed info, even though I have the case # without the a court subpoena. So I decided to just take it as a blessing and move (we had correctly reported a gas leak to con ed just 3 months earlier in the same building which left it without heat for almost a week because mgmt couldn't get their shit together and couldn't be reached for over a day).

Now that I've calmed down, my main concern is that this mgmt co is a very large one, and knowing that this is how they deal with tenants who make complaints about serious things. We were in great standing before this, never missed a rent payment, never even had any problems to speak of. And then when they actually are forced to fix something for someone's safety, they get rid of the person who reported it. I want more people to know, because unless you're actually in this position, you probably have no idea that this is how they handle these things. I wish I could name them, but since I'm still in the building and I'm leaving soon, I want to avoid any unwanted attention until I'm out.

And con ed? They for some reason left it up to the mgmt company to fix the valve on the second visit, without actually checking on it themselves. Even though 3 months ago they found 3 major leaks that the super didn't 'detect' before they came. This is what tenants in NYC have to put up with.
