Surveillance shift: San Francisco pilots program allowing police to live monitor private security cameras

The rise in property crime - car break-ins, catalytic converter theft, and auto theft have long been a feature of SF and other West Coast cities - not because there's not enough surveillance and data.

Prosecutors refuse to appropriately charge repeat offenders with escalating charges. Repeat offenders - even violent ones, tend to walk away with a slap on the wrist. Many of these offenders are homeless and struggle with mental illness - including substance addiction. There are practically no consequences when they refuse to comply with the court-ordered rehab, diversion programs and probation.

No amount of mass surveillance (or additional funding to the cops) is going to fix this problem. If they are actually serious - they should focus on housing, prosecution policies, and requiring the addicts and mentally ill to get help instead of letting them live a consequence-free lifestyle at the expense of rest of the community.
