Survivor’s “#MeToo moment” protected the game instead of the players

The original intent of Survivor was to create a micro-society on an island with an odd mix of individuals and rules that guaranteed conflict -- then sit back and watch what happens.

If Survivor is meant to shine a light on societal tendencies by shrinking the "world" down to a dozen people and filming them 24-7 then I'd say this latest episode was a success.

The harassment dynamics in the game of Survivor are exactly the same as in the real world. If you say something, you might be ostracized. If you say something, some future opportunities might be taken away from you.

It played out in familiar patterns. Women get together in isolation (no men around), compare notes, commiserate and support each other. Those who feel passionately about the issue champion action. Those who feel emboldened stand up for those who feel afraid. There are difficult confrontations, it's hard to speak your truth, and some choose self-preservation over conflict.

And just like in the real world...sometimes the best intentions don't bring about justice. Sometimes all you manage to do is dent someone's reputation but you fail to remove their power or change their behavior.

Did Survivor solve the issue of harassment? Obviously not. It's crazy to think it could. Did it accurately depict the dynamics of harassment? Absolutely. And I think that's still worth something.
