The suspect in the deadly attack on a Quebec City mosque was known in the city’s activist circles as a right-wing troll who frequently took anti-foreigner and anti-feminist positions and stood up for U.S. President Donald Trump.

Before the suspect's name was released, I was reading angry comments against Syrian refugees. Right-wing Canadians REALLY wanted it to be a Syrian refugee so that it would support their position against Canada accepting so many of them. Two "Muslim-sounding" names were even shared that were supposedly "confirmed" on Quebec police radio. "The Daily Mail said so!" One commenter claimed that the shooter was Moroccan and went on about people buying fake Syrian passports to claim refugee status and get welfare. "He was heard shouting Allah Akbar so it was obviously a Muslim terrorist!"

Without the police confirming anything about the suspects at that point, everything they were talking about was based on speculation and rumours. They were just pushing their own beliefs onto a tragic situation where very little information was actually known. When the second suspect (a Muslim) turned out to be a witness, some people started complaining about that because it just couldn't be true!

I guess it's just too much for people to wait for confirmed reports to find out what happened. Everyone's an internet detective and has all of the answers, all of which obviously confirm everything they already believe about Muslims, refugees, and immigration. It was somewhat infuriating.
