Suspected hypothermia deaths in homes mount in Texas

Nope, most are terribly insulated.

Yup. Bad insulation, pipes in exterior walls or run through uninsulated spaces, inefficient furnaces in the attic that just bleed their heat away in the air handler or straight out the exhaust, water heaters in the attic or now I’ve heard even put outside. I moved here from the northeast a few years ago and took for granted the basic measures you find in homes up there like good insulation or common sense about how to run pipes. But here, it’s insane. This applies even to newer construction since code is so lax and the houses are built incredibly cheaply (I live in a fairly well-off area and the guts of the houses are still crap).
