Swim lessons - how much progress to expect

Coming from a former swim instructor, I think your daughter’s progress is good. Treading water for that long is very good at her age, and the games (like diving for rings) are what helps little kids improve. Progress really depends on the kid. I’ve had 4y/o who are able to swim across a 25yd pool but I’ve also had adults who refused to get their face wet, so it really varies. Also the issue with little kids is you don’t want to push them too hard so they start hating the lesson (that’s where the games come in… trick them into swimming across the pool, hehe). I think continuing lessons could be worth it if the place has fantastic instructors with clear milestones. For example, my level one class taught kids how to not get water up their nose, float on their back while being able to breath, and get to the side of the pool while swimming front stroke face down (which it seems is where your kid is at). Once the kid mastered those skills, they’d move on to the next level, where’d they swim further distances and learn new strokes. For my own kids, my oldest learned to swim over a weekend when we were on vacation, spending around 6hrs in a pool each day. Also put him in lessons for a short time when I didn’t feel like getting in the water, but the instructor was very good, had a little card listing of the techniques they were going to learn each session and the entire course was very organized. He even got a little report card and certificate which I though was cheesy but nice. If you are unsure about the class, you can ask what their lessons plans are and what they expect to cover during the course but for $40 per 10 minutes of pool time?? Has to be really good.
