Sysadmin-related community service?

Ask yourself what you want to get out of this.

I and a few colleagues setup a STEM club on Saturday mornings for local 11-14 year-old kids. We've done stuff with Mindstorms as well as more general CS stuff and got some people to come and do talks etc.

Whatever you do, it will be time consuming, especially if you have to do any of the organisational side. Unless there are existing programmes you can jump into, be prepared for a lot more than you would expect.

I feel what I do is very rewarding on a few different levels so there is that.

Personally, I don't really like doing tech support, let alone sysadmin work, if I'm not getting paid for it, and it can be far from ideal having to do unpaid on-call work, which at the same time cannot be left undone if people depend upon systems you have built.
