sysadmins at college/universities: how do you handle accounts for employees that are also students?

Not sure how they do it any more but at one college where I was a student and worked at their help desk I had my student account/email but for work had a different account with more formal email plus a superuser type account that I never ended up needing for my job duties (call center support then walkup). Systems were somewhat split up at the time (now more unified or so I hear) with student email on a similar system to partnered schools but employee email all local. We also had systems associated with our student/employee accounts such as signing in to whitelist MAC addresses for wifi/ethernet on campus or connecting to othe resources. For students our student account did everything that wasn't specific to our jobs while regular employees had the other systems routed to tehir employee account in full. Now they have a much simpler configuration.

At the next college, also worked at the help desk, I had one account for everything but no superuser type account. It appeared to be a much more unified system where I was granted access to the ticket system/email/password reset tools/etc. I kept the same email but did get more storage space similar to an regular employee to account for work related content. Eventually the limits more or less dissapeared they were so high.

Two accounts is more standard with some employee roles requiring a superuser account. At the first college the group I worked with that used this did a lot of deployments to labs or build system for labs and needed greater access for domain joining and similar.
