Taking my dog on the PCT next year, advice?

What is the longest hike you've completed with your dog?

Also, if you think taking huskies (or alaskan malamutes) to arctic conditions is easy, you've never taken huskies to artic conditions. It is HARD work. And even competition huskies would have a hard time of doing 30 miles per day for 5 months. I've competed with huskies and malamutes since I was 5.

Also, herding dogs are not bred or conditioned for long distances day in day out. There's a reason they say "a good shepherd is a lazy shepherd". And there's a big difference between a working herding dog and a "sofa" herding dog. Even though we hike and run with my dog daily, he can't even hold a candle to a working farm dog.

I know you feel like none of these issues concern you as your dog is special. Trust me I know, I've been there. But there's a reason people tell you it's not a good idea. If you do a search here, you'll find this same issue talked extensively every year around this time. And I was right where you are now 1,5 years ago before I finished my PCT plan.

After 6 years of hiking with australian shepherd, and about 20 years with huskies and alaskan malamutes, I would only take my dog on a maximum of one-month long hike. Two weeks would be more optimal.

But again, HYOH
