a taste of their own medicine

The problem is when those things conflict and cause them to hurt others. For example I've talked to a lot of christians who don't care at all about animal rights because they believe in a distinction between humans and other animals and that their god created all other animals just for humans to use. They're impossible to argue with because you can't poke holes in reasoning when there's none to begin with, they argue with "because it says so in this book". You can't refute that. All you can do is try to tell them that maybe they shouldn't base their morals on what a book says. But the book also says that if they don't do what the book says they'll suffer for all eternity. Literally the only way you can get them to stop hurting animals is to convince them their God isn't real.. which you have 0 proof for. It's a freaking nightmare.

If their beliefs were instead based on empathy, it'd be pretty easy to teach them not to hurt others. I don't think all beliefs are inherently harmful, but teaching someone they shouldn't question their actions is very dangerous and a lot of mainstream religions do just that.
