Tax the church !!

Well, if must:

The church gave us art and allowed artists to thrive in the middle ages.

The church is influential in the music movement as they were one of the only institutions in the middle ages to support music prior to the Renaissance.

The church advanced medical care in the middle ages.

The church advanced literature in the middle ages.

The church advanced western architecture in the middle ages.

The church brought a unified culture to Europe after the fall of Rome.

Individual churches support impoverished countries by sending aid, my cousin's has personally built 3 schools in Mexico. Individual churches account for most homeless shelters and food banks in the US.

As I said, I hate organized religion. Today the church is a weapon used by politicians (breaks Commandment 4). However, since it's inception the church was instrumental in building western culture. From art, to medicine, to music, to literature, to architecture; the church played a major part in all of it prior to the "patrons" of the Renaissance. Today Individual churches still try and carry on a legacy of good will towards others, see Mother Teresa. So making a blanket statement that the church has done nothing to benefit "society" tells me you don't know much regarding the foundations of western society.
