These are what I would consider the basics of navigation, simply explained by REI.

Don't need much for gear, either. A decent compass from Silva or Suunto is not expensive. That's one of the ten essentials. Plus your sighting mirror doubles as a signal mirror. Two-in-one is always cool. Oh, learn how to signal using a mirror.

Good paper maps are close to free (print using caltopo or similar sites).

Your phone is a good GPS. Just get a GPS app that stores map data, including topo maps, on your phone, without requiring a data connection at all for full functionality.
