Teacher Admits He Helped Write Common Core to End White Privilege

Your take on what folks think is "privilege" is spot on. But - common core is NOT the federal program that folks are claiming it to be. It's a state program, instituted by governors - most of which were Republican.

Fuck this is getting old. Folks keep posting work assignments about ONE piece of math, that is included in common core, as are hundreds, if not thousands of different learning methods and concepts. What I'm speaking about is the math problems that are about learning how to estimate. FUCKING HOW TO ESTIMATE. It is NOT a replacement for regular math. Teachers and researchers found that kids, over time have become more reliant on technology, calculators, etc, and they've lost the ability to estimate numbers. Those are the "WTF IS THIS COMMON CORE BULLSHIT!" math problems you see posted over and over. It's a method which teaches kids how to make an estimate, mentally, in a second or two. This is a terrific skill, and if you don't HAVE this skill if you make a decimal error, an answer that is wildly incorrect may not stand out to you. It is NOT a replacement for regular math. It's an additional skill they're teaching kids - and it works. Both of my kids are in gifted classes, smart as hell, and their ability to estimate was shitty. They covered estimating some in 3rd grade, and some more in 4th. They're far better at math, because now they can SEE if they've made an obvious fuck up.

My parents couldn't help me with my math in the 70's. It's the same. The methods taught today ARE different, but please can we put away the tin foil hats? There is no group of folks trying to invent new math methodologies so they can take away a parent's ability to help their kids.

The folks in education beg and plead parents to become more involved. Teachers and educators put on events trying to get parents into the school - some have even PAID parents to become involved.

Fuck. This all started when Obama - INCORRECTLY, started to refer to common core as something federal, or something he had some involvement in it's creation.
