Teachers are not martyrs. They are working professionals trying to make a living just like the rest of us and the self-righteous attitude many of them have is honestly so annoying.

If teachers were paid better, we would fix the problem. It would be a more competitive field, like going to medical school or law school and the teachers would be more capable (proven by other countries). Although I know this does not apply everywhere in the US, the area I am from sorely lacked in good teachers. Many of them were seeking the popular life they did not obtain in high school or were missing their "peak years" so sought out the popular kids to befriend them. Also probably bitter since I was not, so likely biased.

I agree and disagree in that, from my experience, it seems like teachers wanted an easy job/education and realize too late that it is a lot harder than it seems. And this is because our public school teachers aren't put through the rigors which should be necessary to ensure only those truly passionate and knowledgable about the career life make it through to the end.
