The problem, Karen, with applying absolute morality to de minimis items is that it opens up the accuser to charges of hypocrisy.

Have you ever gone 1 mile over the speed limit? Rolled through a stop sign? Jaywalked? All those violations are in the realm of public safety. Ever called in sick when you weren’t? That’s theft of a resource that isn’t yours. Ever take a pen from work and use it at home for non-work purposes? Misappropriation of resources.

And of course, did you do any of these things as an adult?

I don’t expect any answers here. I’m simply pointing out the dangers of calling it “theft” when it’s two mini tootsie rolls and a blow-pop left out in a jar on a desk.
