Teachers of Reddit, what is wrong with modern education ?

Yes. This.

Context: We homeschool - our son attends a cottage school run by retired teachers, it's a pretty cool set up for the most part.

I find myself arguing with my son's teachers, though, about this issue. It is my husband and my feeling that if our kid doesn't do his homework, he should suffer the consequences: poor grades, being called out by the teacher, and then losing privileges at home - this is how we choose to support the teachers.

We are pretty constantly hearing, though, that we should make him do his homework. Our son is allowed to make up the work in class, and not penalized, when we get nastygrams from the teacher, judgmental missives assuming we are not good parents if we don't force him to do his work.

This experience is not limited to his current school, it has occurred in other (traditional) schools. The teachers parrot the same refrain: "he's so capable, you need to help him do the work."

To be clear: we are happy to help with his homework, but not to circle overhead and remind him of his assignments, or force him to complete the work. He's nearly 11, and he has the tools to manage this himself. He sometimes chooses not to. Us forcing him to comply is not helping him, long term.

For additional context, when we withdrew him from school, he was several grade levels behind and simply not learning in class. He is profoundly gifted.

Through homeschooling, we have got him to grade level and beyond in the last 18 months and enrolled him in school so he could find his groove, reacclimate to school (because home school is not a long term plan), find his passion and take ownership of his education. We are not letting him languish, it is quite the contrary.
