Is Teaching English in SE Asia any better than working in America?

I still think purchasing power is poor for TEFL jobs in general. TEFL teachers account for some of the poorest paid jobs in these regions because everyone wants to do it. This is really the main issue with the job, if that doesn't bother you then likely nothing will.

I'd say from my experience that the higher the career ladder you climb the more responsibility you will have and the more people will be gunning for your job. There is definitely a lot of pressure in international schools where you will be routinely assessed. People will try to undermine you.

At the lower end of the scale however the issues that you describe don't really exist in TEFL. Generally most local staff will be really kind to basic teachers and nobody will have reason to act negatively towards you unless you get really unlucky or give them reason to.
