Why? Today is not "Belgiums birthday"... On the 21st of july 1831 Leopold I swore allegiance to the Belgian constitution and became our first king.

Belgian National Day was originally celebrated on 27 September, date of the expulsion of Dutch forces from Brussels during the Revolution's "September Days".

In 1880 waren de relaties met Nederland genormaliseerd en werd het als onheus aangevoeld om nog triomfantelijke herdenkingen van deze gebeurtenissen te organiseren. De datum werd daarom bij wet veranderd in de derde zondag van augustus, en de twee daaropvolgende dagen.

Ten slotte werd in 1890 de datum van de feesten definitief vastgesteld op de verjaardag van de eedaflegging van Leopold I: de nieuwe datum in augustus was immers weinig succesvol gebleken, omdat het midden in de vakantieperiode viel

In 1890, this was changed by law to 21 July to strengthen the association between the observance and the monarchy and constitutional order. Since 1991, 27 September has become the official observance of the French Community of Belgium
