As early as the 1830s there were minstrel black face performers where white men made money off of tap dancing, dressing in blackface and portrayed black men as being silly, ignorant, and also happy to be in servitude.

It’s not necessary to paint your face, your arms, and your hands black to dress in a Halloween costume.
