Is TEFL abroad always a transient career choice for you guys?

I always saw it as something temporary. I have my TEFL, Celta and worked four years, yet I don't see any great career progression compared to my software developer background. Teaching has enabled me to learn Chinese, so that's something.

I can't put up with the " being an outsider" feeling. It was okay for the first three years, but after I started getting tired of it. Even if I speak the language and all my friends are local, I still feel it. I've met a few teachers here who have been teaching for 15 years, wife, kids, etc. and they've told me the same.

I have met quite a few people who feel stuck teaching English after meeting their wives and really want to go home (but lack job experience outside of teaching). I think you should have a plan before you go and teach, give yourself a time limit and then decide. I personally have been doing programming work on the side online, just to keep my other skills up.
