TekSavvy Petitions Federal Cabinet to Overrule CRTC’s Arbitrary Rate Decision

Really, any idea why? Pasted below, but I added a line:

Hello,

I'm writing as a citizen upset about the recent CRTC decision to reverse it's own 2019 decision to lower wholesale internet rates.

Canada's large carriers, Bell, Rogers, and Telus, have been overcharging Canadians for internet for years, and the 2019 decision was a small step towards correcting this unethical practice. The Internet is now a necessity for all Canadians and afordable Internet is just as important.

Unfortunately, the recent reversal has now confirmed Canadians fears that CRTC Chairman Scott is beholden to his corporate allegiances and unwilling or unable to make decisions in the interests of Canadians. By reversing the 2019 decision, the CRTC is allowing the large carriers to abuse the power and infrastructure often funded by governments and thus taxpayers over the years.

The Government of Canada's document "High-Speed Access for All: Canada's Connectivity Strategy" provides details for the widespread public investment in internet infrastructure, which is sorely needed in rural areas, however if the only way to access these services is through telecom giants then these massive investments are simply gifts to corporate shareholders on the backs of Canadians who desperately need affordable and adequate internet access in an increasingly digital world.

The examples of public money funding these extremely profitable carriers are numerous. Most recently, in the past year, these three companies collected over $240 million from taxpayers in wage subsidies, despite paying profits to shareholders and simultaneously laying off Canadians. However, even this egregious theft of taxpayer dollars pales in comparison to the billions spent on what is supposed to be public internet infrastructure. Funding a network that is controlled by companies who have proven that they will bend the rules to steal from Canadians during a pandemic is an absolute misuse of taxpayer dollars. If public money is to be used, then the infrastructure must remain public for smaller carriers to use.

The Liberal Government must overrule yesterday’s CRTC decision and demand the resignation of the CRTC Chairman in order to begin to correct the course that the Canadian government has been allowing the major carriers to take. We need accountability for public money, and this is a first step in the right direction.

Thank you,
