Tell me your stories of refusing to hear your DM's hints and going into a different direction (or the reverse for the DM!)

I only go with vague long-term plans of ‘this is the BBEG, this is each characters side quest and goals, let’s find a way towards them’, but it’s entirely driven by the players. I have plenty of maps ready, but I find out what their plans are for the next session/couple of sessions so that I can work around that. There are also 6 players and I won’t do anything main-storyline unless there are at least 4 of them, so I have to be prepared to do one-shot style filler at a moments notice.

Our game is tomorrow, I’ve no idea as yet what they’ll do. I know where they want to go, but it’ll take a few sessions travelling so we’re going to be looking at small settlements around the place, probably. We have a busy group chat on discord, they usually talk about things they want to do on there so I’ll work from that.
